A little follow up to my HR Giger post. Buzzfeed have a great little collection of concept drawings from Alien, simply incredible.
## The Original “Alien” Concept Art Is Terrifying
Buzzfeed by Daniel Dalton
H.R. Giger’s original designs for Alien are even more chilling than the film…

A couple of months back I finished reading Peter F Hamilton’s excellent Nights Dawn Trilogy and was looking for something new to move onto. I’d seen plenty of recommendations for The Name of the Wind from Patrick Rothfuss so I dived in.
Wow. Unfortunately the world still awaits the third and final(?) book in this series and it can’t come soon enough. In Kvothe, Rothfuss has created a character I find thoroughly fascinating. His story unfolds non-chronologically slowly teasing out a fantastical past with hints at the present that left me unable to put it down. Thoroughly recommended!

Any time someone asks after my favourite films Alien is always on the list, it’s probably top of the list. It’s hard to overstate just how much love I have for a film that was probably 15 years old before I first saw it. Much of its appeal comes from the carefully revealed narrative, the suggestive half-glimpses of a terrifying foe and the excellent performances from some Grade A Hollywood talent, but there’s no doubt that the visual design born of the mind of HR Giger is a major part of the wonder of the Alien universe. A sad day indeed, but a legacy that will remain with us forever.
## HR Giger obituary
The Guardian by Ryan Gilbey
Several elements were vital to the effectiveness of the 1979 horror film Alien, which was essentially an old-fashioned haunted house story relocated to deep space. (Its own director, Ridley Scott, called it “a C-movie done in an A-way”.)
Delighted for Lambert, Lallana & Shaw. What a great reward for diligence and endeavour. A credit to #saintsfc and to themselves. COYS!

It’s been a great season for Saints, but it’s going to be a long summer. Here’s hoping we can hold a spine together and reinforce where needed. Signing Pochettino on an extension is job number 1, then we need to strengthen up front and in central defence. If there’s cash left, a move for Cardiff’s Marshall would allow Gazzaniga to go out on loan and a left back to replace or support Shaw would be helpful.
## Southampton: 2013-14 season in statistics
Goal
Southampton emerged as one of the surprise packages of the season as a series of stellar performances secured an eighth-place finish. Mauricio Pochettino’s men averaged the largest amount of possession in the Premier League with 58.6 per cent, and allowed an average of just 9.6 shots per game against them.
